Archaeological reserve Cape Kaliakra

Cape Kaliakra is 12km southeast of Kavarna. It is an elongated and narrowing rocky peninsula, about 2km inland. The slopes of Cape Kaliakra are 60-70m high and go straight into the water. The name Kaliakra means "beautiful cape". One of the legends tells of 40 Bulgarian girls, led by the beautiful Kaliakra, who jumped from the rocks into the sea to escape from the Ottoman Turks. They braided each other's hair so that none of them would give up. There is a museum in one of the caves on Cape Kaliakra where many archaeological finds can be seen.
