Asen's Fortress

Assen's fortress is a medieval fortress in the Rhodope Mountains. It is situated 2 km away from Asenovgrad. The fortress is built on an inaccessible rock at the beginning of the passage linking the area of Thrace with the Aegean Sea. In 1231 Tsar Ivan Asen II made the largest extension and reconstruction of the fortress, the evidence of which is a carved rock inscription. That's why it is called Tsar Assen's Fortress.
