"Rusokastro" Fortress

Rusokastro Fortress is a medieval fortification located in the Burgas region, about 30 km from the city of Burgas. The fortress occupies a strategic location on top of a rocky hill. Its area is 35 decares. The hill is naturally protected on three sides by the Rusokastrenska River flowing next to it. The interior of the fortress is dotted with various buildings, including a church, barracks and water tanks. Among the most interesting finds unearthed during the excavations were a tablet of a Thracian horseman, and a lead seal of King Peter with the face of Christ. The battle between Bulgaria and Byzantium took place here on July 18, 1332 and ended with a victory for Bulgaria. The Bulgarian troops were led by Tsar Ivan Alexander and the Byzantine troops by Emperor Andronicus III. This is considered the last great victory of Bulgaria in the Middle Ages. The Rusokastro Fortress was declared a cultural monument of national importance. Today it is a popular tourist destination.
